Monica Wainaina holds a Bachelor’s degree in Health Science from the University of the People, California, USA. She also holds a Diploma in Social Work and Community Development from the Kenya Institute of Development Studies, a Diploma in Early Childhood Education Development, and an Advanced Certificate in Sign Language Interpretation obtained through a research project at the University of Nairobi. In addition, she holds a Certificate in French from Alliance Française and is currently pursuing a postgraduate degree in Mental Health Nursing at the University of Greenwich, United Kingdom.

She has over a decade of experience working in the humanitarian and development sectors in Kenya, with a strong focus on programmes aimed at improving the quality of life for persons with disabilities. She is among the first Kenyan Government–registered Accessibility Auditors, ensuring dignified and inclusive access to environments and services for persons with disabilities.

Monica has worked with leading organisations including the National Council for Persons with Disabilities, CBM Kenya, Deaf Empowerment Kenya, Deaf Child Worldwide, Sign Language Learning and Inclusive Services, and Cheshire Disability Services Kenya, among others. She has held various roles including Disability Service Officer, Sign Language Interpreter, Trainer, Disability Assessor, Project Officer, and Director of Resource Mobilisation.

She is a highly experienced Sign Language Interpreter and Trainer with over 10 years of expertise in Kenyan Sign Language (KSL), British Sign Language (BSL), and American Sign Language (ASL), providing services to organisations, corporate clients, private clients, and media houses such as Citizen TV and Inooro TV.

She is a subject matter expert in sign language interpretation, Deaf community development, and inclusive communication strategies. Currently based in the United Kingdom, she is actively involved in implementing disability inclusion programmes across diverse disability groups including Deaf individuals, persons with learning disabilities, epilepsy, dementia, autism, blindness, and behavioural challenges. This international experience strengthens SEAL’s capacity to deliver inclusive programmes for persons with disabilities and the wider community.

Monica is a Managing Director at Sign Education Africa Limited (SEAL), a collaborative platform founded by Highway Limited, Sign Language Interpretation and Inclusion Services (SLIINC), and the Deaf Institute of Communication and Sign Language Training (DICSLT). SEAL exists to bridge communication gaps through sign language training, broadcast communication, and disability inclusion services that promote social, economic, and educational inclusion for all.
